  About the Department

GOAL

Under Graduates (UG)

The course in ophthalmology aims at providing knowledge and skills to the student enabling her/him to practice as a clinical or primary eye care physician and also to function effectively as a community health leader, assisting in the implementation of National Programme for the Control of Blindness (NPCB) and rehabilitation of the visually impaired.

Post Graduates (PG)

Our goal is to preserve and restore vision through excellence in provision of eye care services, medical education, and clinical research. In preparing for the future of eye care, our department provides outstanding resident education to train the ophthalmologists of tomorrow, while performing research that will influence the future management of eye disease.

Patient Care

Our most fundamental function is to serve the community through patient care. As we see patients daily, our primary goal is to offer them quality care. We will maintain our strong tradition of reaching out to poor and needy. We continue to expand our subspecialty areas by adding new faculty and positions, leading to a higher quality of overall care.

Teaching

Department of Ophthalmology is dedicated to providing an up to date and comprehensive educational program to its residents and medical students. Our goal is to produce leaders in the field of ophthalmology who are medically, surgically, and socially competent. The Department of Ophthalmology has an outstanding residency program, training 4 residents each year. We will endeavor to educate our colleagues in ophthalmology and other medical fields on how to provide better eye care to our patients.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE

Under Graduates
The undergraduate course ophthalmology aims at imparting knowledge and skills to students enabling them to practice as a clinical and primary eye care physician. The course further aims at ensuring that the students learn to function effectively as a community health leader capable of giving assistance in the implementation of National Programme for the prevention of blindness and rehabilitation of the visually impaired.
Post Graduates
A candidate upon successfully qualifying in the M.S. (Ophthalmology) examinations should be able to
  • Offer to the community, the quality service of modern standards in ophthalmic diagnosis and therapeutics, medical or surgical, in most of the common and easily managed situations at the level of health service.
  • Periodically self assess her/his performance and keep abreast with latest developments in the field and apply the same in her/his practice.
  • Be aware of her/his limitations to the application of the specialty in situations which warrant referral to more qualified centers or individuals.
  • Apply research and epidemiological methods during her/his practice. The candidate shall be able to present or publish work done by her/him.
  • Contribute as individual/groups towards the fulfillment of national objectives with regard to prevention of blindness.
  • Effectively communicate with patients or relatives so as to educate them sufficiently and give them the full benefit of informed consent to treatment and ensure compliance and be able to deal with them effectively. She/he should also be made aware of Mobile Ophthalmic Unit and its working and components.
  • She/he should be familiar with the current developments in Ophthalmic Sciences.
  • She/he should be able to plan educational programmes in ophthalmology in association with his senior colleagues and be familiar with the modern methods of teaching and evaluation.
  • She/he should be able to identify a problem for research, of a nature involving epidemiological studies or combination thereof, clearly state his objective, plan a rational approach to its solution and execute it and critically evaluate his data in the light of existing knowledge.
  • She/he should know that conclusions should be reached by logical deduction and should be able to assess evidence both as to its reliability and its relevance.
