About the Department


The broad goal of teaching undergraduate students of Forensic Medicine is to produce a physician who is well informed about Medico-legal responsibility during his/her practice of Medicine. He/She will also be capable of making observations & inferring conclusions by logical deductions to set enquiries on right track in criminal matters & associated medicolegal problems. He/she will acquire knowledge of law in relation to medical practice, medical negligence & respect of codes of Medical ethics.



At the end of course, the student shall be able to

  1. Identify the basic medicolegal aspects of hospital & general practice
  2. Define the medicolegal responsibilities of general physician while rendering community service either in a rural primary health center or an urban health center
  3. Appreciate the physician's responsibilities in criminal matters & respect for the codes of medical ethics
  4. Diagnose, manage & identify also legal aspect of common acute & chronic poisoning
  5. Describe medicolegal aspect & findings of postmortem examination in cases of death due to common unnatural conditions & poisoning
  6. Detect occupational & environmental poisoning, prevention & epidemiology of common poisoning & their legal aspects particularly pertaining of Workmen's compensation act
  7. Describe the general principles of analytical toxicology.


A comprehensive list of skills & attitude recommended by medical council of India regulation, desirable for Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) graduate for Forensic Medicine & Toxicology.

At the end of the course, student shall be able to

  1. Make observations & logical inferences in order to initiate enquiries in criminal matters & medicolegal problems
    1. To be able to carry on proper medicolegal examination & documentation / reporting of injury & age
    2. To be able to conduct examination of sexual offences & intoxication
    3. To be able to preserve relevant & ancillary materials for medicolegal examination
    4. To be able to identify important postmortem findings in common unnatural deaths
  2. Diagnose & treat common emergencies in poisoning & chronic toxicity.
  3. Make observations & interpret findings at postmortem examination.
  4. Observe the principles of medical ethics in the practice of his profession.


Department shall provide an integrated approach towards allied disciplines like Pathology, Radiology, Forensic sciences, Hospital administration etc. to impart training regarding medicolegal responsibilities of physicians at all levels of healthcare. Integration with relevant disciplines will provide scientific basic of clinical toxicology e.g. Medicine, Pharmacology etc.

  • Guidance to Medical officer in postmortem examination.

Specialized equipment available in the department

There is well equipped laboratory as per the curriculum of Undergraduate course. The department has a fully functional laboratory which offers the facility to conduct the tests which are essential in forensic investigations as well as for academic and research purpose. Laboratory is equipped with various equipments like Histopathology equipments, Toxicology Equipments, Serology Kits & Anthropometric set.
