The Department of Medicine is widely regarded as the clinical backbone of any medical college and healthcare institution. It gives me immense pride to state that the Department of Medicine at Dr. Vasantrao Pawar Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre is a vibrant, progressive, and patient-centred department committed to delivering comprehensive, ethical, affordable, and high-quality healthcare services.
As one of the largest departments in the institution, the Department of Medicine is strengthened by a dedicated team of experienced senior faculty members, skilled clinicians, enthusiastic young teachers, resident doctors, and specialists from multiple medical subspecialties. The department has expertise in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Critical Care Medicine, and Rheumatology. This multidisciplinary strength enables us to provide primary, secondary, tertiary, and selected super specialty services to a large population of Nashik and the surrounding districts at an affordable cost.
The department operates a well-equipped Medical Intensive Care Unit with advanced ventilators, multipara meter monitors, infusion pumps, and other essential critical-care facilities. Critically ill patients with sepsis, multi organ dysfunction, poisoning, neurological emergencies, cardiac emergencies, obstetric and gynaecological emergencies, and other life-threatening medical conditions are managed through a coordinated multidisciplinary team approach.
Our Cardiac Care Unit is supported by a functional Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory offering coronary angiography, angioplasty, temporary and permanent pacemaker implantation, balloon mitral valvotomy, and comprehensive medical management of cardiovascular and rheumatic valvular heart diseases.
The Department of Nephrology and Artificial Kidney Dialysis Unit provides maintenance haemodialysis for patients with chronic kidney disease and emergency renal replacement therapy for patients with acute kidney injury. A significant recent milestone for the institution has been the successful performance of four renal transplant procedures during the last three months, marking an important advancement in our tertiary and superspecialty renal-care services.
The department also provides comprehensive gastroenterology services, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP, stenting, and other diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Neurology services include specialised diagnostic facilities such as electroencephalography, electromyography, and nerve conduction studies, enabling systematic evaluation and management of patients with neurological disorders.
The Department of Medicine has been successfully conducting its postgraduate training programme for more than thirteen years, with an annual intake of five postgraduate students. Postgraduate residents receive structured clinical exposure and hands-on training through rotations in Cardiology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Critical Care Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Dermatology, and Psychiatry. This comprehensive training helps them develop competence in the management of common illnesses, complex multisystem disorders, and medical emergencies.
Research and academic development remain integral to the department’s vision. Postgraduate students undertake dissertation projects under the guidance of recognised postgraduate teachers. Faculty members actively participate in clinical research and clinical trials as principal investigators and co-investigators. Residents are encouraged to document unusual and rare clinical cases, prepare scientific papers, and submit their work for publication in indexed medical journals. Participation in poster presentations, paper presentations, clinical case competitions, quizzes, conferences, workshops, and continuing medical education programmes at institutional, state, and national levels is actively promoted.
Beyond formal academics, the department encourages students and residents to participate in cultural, literary, sports, and extracurricular activities. Initiatives such as the annual Fresher’s Programme have further strengthened interpersonal relationships, interdepartmental coordination, teamwork, and institutional belonging among postgraduate residents.

The department also conducts educational sessions for students of other professional disciplines, including Engineering, Architecture, Business Studies, Physiotherapy, and allied healthcare programmes.
