Best Practices

  1. Whats App Clinical Sharing group of Students and faculty
  2. Simulation workshop for learning of Dermatosurgery

 1. Title:

Creation of Whats app group for easy and quick learning and sharing of knowledge

Objectives:

  • To discuss daily/weekly interesting cases.
  • To post updated information/guidelines /material related to dermatology field.
  • To share knowledge.
  • To solve the queries raised by students.

Context:

Many times we come across with interesting cases or the complicated cases but due to sometimes non-availability of students or faculties everyone may not be able to see that particular case. In such situation we share the images and brief history of such patients on Whats app group so that all faculty and students can see those cases and learn about it and have discussion about it.

The Practice:

Through this platform we were able to keep the track of all interesting cases in our department and we were able to learn more about it.

Also, we carry out quizzes based on such cases which later compiled by the students and at the end of each month or on suitable day we have discussion regarding those cases.

We also share recent advances in the field of dermatology on whats app group.

Evidence of Success:

Through this activity our students acquired more clinical expertise and they also presented interesting cases in the conferences/meetings.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required:

Many times we faced the problem of poor/suboptimal image qualities, as good quality photographs are required to confirm the morphology of lesions and for correct diagnosis.

2. Title:

Simulation workshop for learning of Dermatosurgery

Objectives:

  • To enable students to acquire the different suture techniques through its demonstration on fruits/chicken
  • To gain expertise in taking biopsies and its different techniques through its demonstration on fruits/chicken

 Context:

Residents are often not much skilled in taking biopsies and sutures. They often encounter problems with it and may feel uncomfortable on doing such procedures on patients. Hence to gain confidence in them we conducted simulation workshop in which residents tried to do suture and take biopsies on animal or fruit models.

 The Practice:

First, we demonstrated the residents the correct ways of taking biopsies via various techniques and later on how to suture it based on fruit or chicken breast model. Later residents were allowed to perform the same and advised to practice it again and again.

Evidence of Success:

After this simulation workshop, students were able to take biopsies and suturing very confidently and without hesitation. In fact they asked to us to keep such workshops often involving different topics/areas of dermatology where surgical skills are required.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required:

Need of more sophisticated instruments and model for demonstration.

Google Classroom online learning activity was started in April 2020. This included online presentation of Seminar , Journal clubs, & Case discussions. They activity is on- going and especially useful during Covid-19 Pandemic.
